Overview:
Patau Syndrome or Trisomy 13 is a disease that effects intellectual integrity, heart defects, brain damage, and physical abnormalities. This disorder destroys infants lives and the rate of survival with the disease for one year is 10 percent. Patau Syndrome is fatal and life threatening to 1 in 16000 babies born. It deforms and destroys newborns and is a relatively sad and destructive disease. Signs and Symptoms:
The signs of Patau Syndrome are pretty clear, the baby in the mothers stomach will have many deformations and have smaller eyes (microphthalmia).Your baby will be deformed and can have more fingers or toes then usual and also a cleft lip or cleft palate which is dangerous if not treated. Since there are so many serious sometimes hard to treat deformities the baby usually days in first days of life or first weeks. Genetics:
Trisomy 13 is not genetic as it is not possible to carry a completely fatal disease. Trisomy 13 is caused by random events during cell division when the sperm and egg cell create an extra 13th chromosome through (disjunction). It can (technically) be inherited with a DNA mutation that has DNA from another chromosome on chromosome 13 making the baby have it. As a women grows older she has a higher chance of having a kid with Trisomy 13 or other diseases in general. It seems as females are more affected as males generally don't survive birth. Distribution:
Trisomy 13 is not differ from any type of race, ethnicity, or nationality it is instead caused by how old the mother is. Trisomy 13 is just a disorder were there is a copy of chromosome 13. The reason for older women being affected is when meiosis occurs the chromosomes fail to separate correctly. Management and Treatment:
Trisomy 13 doesn't have any special medicine that cures people as many babies die at infancy or a week later. But, there is speech therapy and surgery to remove extra fingers, arms, legs, or anything that was mutated. This can take several weeks and as all of this is happening your baby isn't growing correctly so it starts to die day by day. They will need to repair cleft palates, cleft lips, or heart defects as these are all symptoms of Patau and most are fatal with in days or weeks. Patau Syndrome is an evil disease and if one child you have gets it you shouldn't take the chance to have another child as their is almost a 0% survival rate. Miscellaneous:
One fact about Patau syndrome is that one person ever has survived to the age of 19. They had numerous surgeries and tests put into them before they sadly passed away. One boy survived to the age of 11 before sadly passing too. Both of these patients were of African American ethnicity and died over the age of 10. Society and culture:
In society this disorder is viewed as one of the worst things a family has to go through as it debilitates your child and makes them suffer before slowly dying. It is viewed in all cultures as evil or a curse because it is uncureable close to untreatable and is an evil disease that kills 80% of kids with it in one year. A person is disabled to a full extent and needs numerous surgeries, and speech therapies so that they can at least start to get better. But most kids die by the age 1 if there lucky so the disease doesn't even allow humans to evolve enough to start to contribute to society. History:
Trisomy 13 was first looked on by Thomas Barholin in 1657 but later fully observed by Dr. Klaus Patau in 1960 which is how it got it's name. He researched why and how it happened and found out it's through an extra strand forming in Chromosome 13 during development which caused deformities, speech impediments, and heart defects. To this day this is almost all we know about the disease as it is so rare and scary. Patau is one of the worst disease known to man which is why we can't exactly put a finger on why it happens or how we just know older women have more children with it and that it causes many medically serious defects in humans.
